Dr. Jay Grossman is a dentist who lives in Los Angeles. It has been over 15 years since he formed an organization to aid the homeless out of a project he began in his Self-Expression and Leadership program. ‘Homeless not Toothless’ began with Dr. looking for a way to make a difference with homeless people beyond giving them the occasional dollar. He began by offering them free dental care, followed by referrals to homeless shelters and job placement. The organization has grown to includeother dentists, and since 1992, ’Homeless not Toothless’ has provided over 1 million dollars worth of free dental work through over 30 different dental practices in the Los Angeles area. Each of these dental practices has delivered the care without any financial compensation. Grossman and the organization have been covered extensively by the media, including pieces in the New York Times, on NBC and CNN. Here is a television broadcast where Grossman explains the program:

Film creator Doug Block was influenced by his participation in Landmark Education’s programs as he made the film. New York Times Critic A.O. Scott called 51 Birch Street “One of the most moving and fascinating documentaries I’ve seen.” It tells a universal story of our desire to be at peace with our parents and their lives. Here’s a piece of it:
