Blake Rockwell has always been a sports fanatic. When the time came to choose a project in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program, he knew that he wanted to do something that both involved sports and helped people in the world. The idea he came up with was to give very sick children the opportunity to attend important college sporting events, and Special Spectators was born.
The children get a lot more than the opportunity to see the game. They get front row seating, an opportunity to tour the locker room, meet the players and get introduced on the field at halftime of each game, where the entire audience cheers for them. The project has covered by a wide range of television, print and radio media, including ESPN. In the five years since Rockwell started Special Spectators, it has grown to include 40 different colleges and universities that participate. Here’s ESPN’s coverage of the project.
